Printer spooler service

If you’re on Window 7 or 10 and see this error saying that you don’t run your print spooler, you’re not alone. Many Windows users report it. But great news can be fixed. This article is going to show you five ways to try.

 

What is the spooler for printing?

 

The print spooler is a Window service that manages all the print jobs that you are sending to your printer. If the service is not working, it won’t work for your printer.

 

How do I fix the stoppage of the print spooler?

 

You will try to solve five problems here. You may not have to try all of them; work the list down until you find the one that works. Note: Windows 10 screens shown below, but all updates also refer to my print spooler keeps stopping problem.

 

Step 1: Restart the Print Spooler service.

 

1) Press the Window logo key and R to invoke the Run box on your keyboard at the same time.

 

2) Type Services.msc and open the Services window by clicking Enter:

 

3) Click Print Spooler and restart.

 

4) Check if your printer is working.

 

If the print spooler function is not set to automatic, it will not turn on when Windows begins, and your printer will not operate until you start the service manually.

 

 

To switch it to auto: 

 

1) To invoke the Run box simultaneously on your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R.

 

2) Services.MSc type and press Enter to open the Services window:

 

3) Right-click Print Spooler and then click Properties.

 

4) Make sure you set the startup form to Automatic, then press Apply > OK.

 

5) Check if your printer is working.

 

Option 3: Update the Print Spooler recovery options 

 

If your print spooler recovery settings are incorrect, it will not automatically restart your print spooler if it fails for some reason.

 

To set the recovery settings correctly:

 

1) Press the Window logo key and R to invoke the Run box on your keyboard at the same time.

 

2) Services.MSc type and press Enter to open the Services window:

 

3) Right-click Print Spooler and then click Properties.

 

4) Click Reset, make sure that all three fault fields are set to Reboot and click Apply > OK.

 

5) Check to see if your printer is working.

 

Option 4: Delete your print spooler files

 

 

This will cause your print spooler to stop if your pending print jobs are not enough. Deleting the print spooler files also solves the problem to clear out pending print jobs.

 

1) Press the Window logo key on your keyboard and press R to invoke the Run box at the same time.

 

2) Services.MSC select and click Enter to open the Services window: 3) Press Print Spooler and then Wait.

 

4) Click— to reduce the Services window: 5) Press the Windows logo key and E to open Windows File Explorer simultaneously on your keyboard.

 

6) Go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS: Click Continue if you are prompted for permission.

 

7) Delete all PRINTERS folder files. This folder is empty:

 

8) Press the Window logo key and R to invoke the Run box at the same time on your keyboard.

 

9) Control type and press Enter to open the Control Panel:

 

10) Choose Catalog viewing from the open window. Then click Display devices and printers.

 

11) Right-click your printer and click Delete Device:

 

12) Click the Services icon in the Taskbar to go back to the Services window:

 

13) Click Print Spooler to start.

 

14) To return to the Devices and Printers tab, click the Devices and Printers icon in your Taskbar:

 

15) Right-click the blank field, then click Add a printer to re-add your printer, then follow the on-screen instructions:

 

16) Check to see if your printer is working.

 

 

Method 5: Update your printer driver

 

Printer driver An old or incorrect printer driver may also cause this error. You can manually update your printer driver, or you can do it automatically with Driver Easy if you’re not sure about playing with drivers. Fix print spooler keeps stopping problem
